Nearly every "best free keyword research tools" list you will find today was written by a company that sells a keyword research tool — or updated so lightly that it still quotes prices from 2024. We took the six pages currently ranking for free keyword research tools, opened every tool ourselves in September 2026, and checked what the free tier actually gives you today.

The short version: the free stack got better in 2026, not worse — but the good stuff has moved. Google Search Console added generative-AI reporting on 3 June 2026. Bing quietly kept the only free tool that shows exact search volumes. Semrush was bought by Adobe and rebuilt its entire pricing ladder. Ahrefs renamed its free tier. And at least three of the "free plan" limits quoted in the top-ranking articles right now are simply wrong.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • No single free tool is enough — but a stack of four free tools (Keyword Planner + Bing Webmaster Tools + Search Console + Ahrefs Keyword Generator) covers about 85% of what a ৳15,000/month subscription does.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools is the sleeper pick. It is the only genuinely free tool that reports exact monthly search volumes instead of Google's "1K–10K" buckets — and almost no 2026 roundup mentions it.
  • Google Keyword Planner is free forever, but hides exact volumes from accounts with no ad spend. There is a legitimate in-product workaround using the Forecast tab.
  • Prices in most current articles are out of date. Semrush restructured its plans around May 2026 (SEO / Starter / Pro+ / Advanced), AnswerThePublic starts at $11 not $20, and Mangools Basic is nowhere near the $61 figure still being quoted.
  • Bangla and Banglish queries are the cheapest opportunity in Bangladesh SEO. Every tool on this list supports the Bangladesh location; almost nobody uses it properly.
  • Free tools cannot see AI Mode queries. Search Console's new AI report shows impressions only — no queries, no clicks. Plan accordingly.

What changed in free keyword research in 2026

If you last audited your keyword tools in 2024 or 2025, four things have shifted underneath you. All four are recent enough that most published roundups have not caught up.

Change When Why it matters for free users
Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush 28 Apr 2026 An all-cash deal reported at roughly $1.9 billion. The free tier survived the transition, but plan names and prices did not.
Semrush replaced Pro / Guru / Business ~May 2026 New buyers now choose SEO, Starter, Pro+ or Advanced. Every article still quoting "Pro at $139.95" is describing a plan you can no longer select.
Search Console added generative-AI reports 3 Jun 2026 You can finally see impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode — but only impressions. No clicks, no CTR, no query data.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools became "Ahrefs Free" 2026 Same free verified-site account, new name — and a new paid Starter tier at $29/month sitting above it.

There is one more change that shapes everything below. AI Overviews now appear on close to half of all Google queries, up from roughly 31% in early 2025 to about 48% by February 2026. That does not make keyword research obsolete — it makes choosing the right kind of keyword far more important than finding one with a big number next to it. We come back to this in the AI section.

How we tested (and what we tested with)

"Tested" gets thrown around loosely in tool roundups. Here is exactly what we did, so you can judge the results for yourself.

TEST PROTOCOL

  • Every tool was opened on a brand-new free account (or with no account, where allowed) in early September 2026 — no trials, no legacy plans, no affiliate dashboards.
  • We ran the same three seed keywords through each one: a competitive English commercial term (free keyword research tools), a Bangladesh-local service term (digital marketing agency in Dhaka), and a Bangla-script informational term (ফ্রিল্যান্সিং কিভাবে শিখব).
  • We recorded four things: how many ideas came back, which metrics were visible without paying, whether Bangladesh was selectable as a location, and where the free wall actually falls.
  • We cross-checked every stated limit and price against the vendor's own live pages, not against other blog posts. Where sources disagreed, we say so instead of picking the tidier number.
  • Tools were disqualified if the "free plan" was really a 7-day trial in disguise.

One caveat worth stating up front: free-plan limits change without announcements. Two tools on this list quietly moved their allowance between our first and second check. Treat every number below as accurate for early September 2026 and verify on the day you sign up. Any article that presents these limits as permanent facts is misleading you.

All 10 free keyword research tools at a glance

Tool Best for Free allowance (Sep 2026) Volume data BD location

Bing Webmaster Tools Exact volumes, question mining Unlimited, free forever Exact numbers Yes
Google Search Console Keywords you already rank for Unlimited, free forever Your impressions, not market volume Yes
Ahrefs Keyword Generator Fast ideas + difficulty scores Up to ~100 ideas per search, no login Estimated, clickstream-based Yes
Semrush (free account) Deepest metrics per keyword 10 requests/day, 10 results per report Estimated Yes

Mangools KWFinder is covered below but sits outside the top 10: its permanent free tier is now too thin to research with, though its 10-day Free+ window is one of the better evaluation offers on the market.

1. Google Keyword Planner — best for sizing real Google demand

Every other tool on this list estimates. Keyword Planner reports from the source. That single fact is why it stays at number one despite an interface built entirely for advertisers.

What you actually get for free

Keyword Planner is free forever, and you do not need to run ads or enter billing details to use it. Create a Google Ads account in Expert Mode, choose the option to skip campaign creation, and you land straight in the tool. From there you get two modes: Discover new keywords (enter a seed term or your own URL and get ideas) and Get search volume and forecasts (paste a list you already have).

Each idea comes with average monthly searches, three-month and year-on-year change, competition level, ad impression share, and top-of-page bid ranges. You can filter by location, language, and date range, and export the whole thing to CSV.

The ranges problem — and the legitimate way around it

Here is the catch that trips up every beginner. Without an active campaign and consistent spend, the "Avg. monthly searches" column shows buckets like 100–1K or 10K–100K instead of numbers. That range spans an entire order of magnitude. A term getting 1,300 searches and one getting 9,400 both sit inside "1K–10K", and the decision to publish usually lives right in that gap.

Google does this deliberately — it reserves granular data for paying advertisers. There is no documented spend threshold, but in practice a modest live campaign is enough to tighten the numbers.

The Forecast workaround (free, inside the product)

Tick the keywords you care about in the ideas table, add them to a saved plan, then open the Forecast tab. Push the maximum CPC bid high enough to capture near-total impression share, and the projected impressions figure gives you a far tighter estimate than the bucket ever will. It is not a hack — it is the tool's own forecasting engine, and it costs nothing.

Setting it up for Bangladesh

Two settings decide whether the data is useful to you. Set Location to Bangladesh (or Dhaka / Chattogram / Sylhet for local service pages), and set Language deliberately — leaving it on English will hide Bangla-script demand entirely. Switch it to Bengali and run the same seed again; the two lists rarely overlap as much as people expect.

✔ Strengths

First-party Google data · genuinely unlimited · free forever · excellent location and language control · exports cleanly.

✘ Weaknesses

Volume ranges without ad spend · merges close variants into one figure · "competition" measures advertiser demand, not organic difficulty · idea suggestions skew commercial, so informational topics are under-represented.

Verdict: the foundation of any free stack, but never the whole stack. Use it to size demand, then validate difficulty elsewhere. We go deeper on the interface in our step-by-step keyword research guide.

2. Bing Webmaster Tools Keyword Research — the most underrated free tool of 2026

This is the pick that should change how you work. Of the six pages currently ranking for our target keyword, not one lists Bing Webmaster Tools. That is a genuine blind spot, because it does the one thing Google refuses to do for free.

It gives you exact volumes, not buckets

Sign in with any verified Bing Webmaster Tools account and open Keyword Research in the sidebar. Enter up to four seed keywords, filter by country, language and device, and you get back real monthly search counts from organic Bing queries — a figure like 1,847, not "1K–10K". There is no ad-spend gate and no upgrade prompt, because the tool was built for webmasters rather than advertisers.

Why Bing numbers still tell you about Google

The obvious objection: Bing is a fraction of Google's share in Bangladesh, so why care? Because search demand shape is largely engine-independent. If phrase A gets four times the searches of phrase B on Bing, that ratio almost always holds on Google too. You are not using Bing's absolute number as your Google forecast — you are using it to rank candidates against each other with precision Google denies you.

The Question filter is the second reason to open it. It surfaces question-format queries, which double as the prompts people type into Copilot and other AI assistants — exactly the phrasing you want if you are writing for answer engines rather than blue links.

✔ Strengths

Exact volumes at no cost · unlimited use · country, language and device filters · question filter is superb for AEO · sits next to your Bing indexing and backlink data.

✘ Weaknesses

Bing's Bangladesh sample is thin, so very long-tail Bangla terms may return nothing · no keyword difficulty score · requires site verification.

Verdict: if you take one action from this article, verify a Bing Webmaster Tools property this week. It costs nothing and it is the closest thing to free exact-volume data that exists.

3. Google Search Console — the only tool showing your real keywords

Every other tool tells you what the market searches. Search Console tells you what the market searches and finds you for. For any site with even a trickle of traffic, that makes it the highest-value free keyword tool in existence — and the most consistently skipped.

The striking-distance play

Open Performance → Search results, set the date range to the last three months, add the Query dimension, and filter to positions between 8 and 20. Those are keywords Google already associates with your pages but has not quite promoted. Improving one of them is usually faster and cheaper than chasing a brand-new term — you are editing an existing page, not building authority from zero.

Filter by Country → Bangladesh to strip out irrelevant international impressions, which matters enormously if you have any English-language content picking up stray traffic from India or the US.

The new AI report — what it does and does not show

On 3 June 2026, Google launched dedicated generative-AI performance reports in Search Console. They isolate how often your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, plus generative AI features in Discover. It is the first official visibility any site owner has had into those surfaces.

Read this before you get excited

The report shows impressions only — broken down by page, country, device and date. There is no click data, no CTR, and crucially no query-level data. You can see that you appeared; you cannot see what was typed. Google also confirmed these impressions were always folded into your overall totals, so your headline numbers have not changed. The rollout has been staged, so your property may not have it yet.

A second addition shipped alongside it: a control that lets you block your content from appearing in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features. Think hard before using it — blocking removes you from the surface, it does not send the click back to your blue link.

✔ Strengths

First-party truth · unlimited and free · country filtering · striking-distance analysis is the single highest-ROI free workflow in SEO · new AI visibility reporting.

✘ Weaknesses

Useless for a brand-new site with no impressions · anonymised long-tail queries are withheld · 16-month history cap · AI report has no queries or clicks.

Verdict: not a discovery tool — a validation and expansion tool. Pair it with Keyword Planner and you have both halves of the picture.

4. Ahrefs Free Keyword Generator — fastest route to ideas plus difficulty

Ahrefs does not appear in the Zapier roundup at all, which is a strange omission given it operates one of the largest keyword indexes in the industry — a database it puts at more than eight billion queries — and gives a slice of it away with no account required.

What the free generator returns

Enter a seed and pick Google, Bing, YouTube or Amazon. You get back around 100 keyword ideas per search, each with a search volume estimate and, critically, a Keyword Difficulty score. Difficulty is the metric free tools almost never hand over, and it is the one that stops you writing 2,000 words for a term you have no chance of ranking for. Toggle the Questions view to isolate informational queries.

Ahrefs' volume figures are clickstream-derived estimates rather than Google's own data, so treat them as directional. Where they earn their keep is in relative comparison — and in the difficulty score, which is built from the link profiles of pages currently ranking.

"Ahrefs Free" — the renamed webmaster account

What used to be Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now simply Ahrefs Free. Verify a site you own and you get limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access for that property: your ranking keywords, your backlinks, your top pages, and over a hundred technical checks. It will not do competitor research on domains you do not own, and normal Keywords Explorer access is not included — for keyword work you stay on the standalone free tools.

Above the free tier sits a paid Starter plan at $29/month, which is the cheapest serious entry point of any major suite and roughly a fifth of Semrush's opening price. If you were going to pay for exactly one tool, this is where the maths currently points.

✔ Strengths

No signup for the generator · free Keyword Difficulty · covers Bing, YouTube and Amazon · Bangladesh selectable · cheapest credible upgrade path at $29/month.

✘ Weaknesses

Roughly 100 ideas per search · no export or advanced filters on free · estimated rather than first-party volumes · the free account is for sites you own only.

Verdict: the difficulty scores alone justify keeping this tab open. Use it immediately after Keyword Planner to kill unwinnable terms before you invest in them.

5. Semrush free account — richest data, harshest ceiling

Semrush gives you more per keyword than anything else on this list: volume, difficulty, intent classification, CPC, SERP features present, and the pages currently ranking. Its Keyword Magic Tool draws on a database Semrush now puts in the tens of billions of keywords across roughly 140 regional databases, Bangladesh included.

Then you hit the wall, hard.

The free plan in numbers

A free Semrush account allows 10 analytics requests per day across Domain and Keyword Analytics combined, with each report returning only 10 results. You also get one monitored project, 10 tracked keywords in Position Tracking, and a site audit capped at 100 pages per month. Keyword Gap and Backlink Gap stay locked.

Ten requests sounds workable until you actually research a topic. One seed lookup, one difficulty check, three competitor SERP checks — that is half your day gone on a single article. And a report that returns 10 rows is a sample, not a keyword list.

The pricing situation has changed — ignore what most articles say

Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, in an all-cash deal reported around $1.9 billion. Shortly after, Semrush retired the Pro / Guru / Business ladder that had been in place for a decade. A new buyer today chooses between SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, positioned as "SEO plus AI Search" rather than SEO alone.

Plan Monthly Annual (per month) Roughly, in BDT/month
Free $0 $0 ৳0
SEO $139 $117.33 ৳17,000
Starter $199 $165.17 ৳24,400
Pro+ $299 $248.17 ৳36,700
Advanced $549 $455.67 ৳67,400

BDT figures use the monthly rate at roughly ৳123 to the dollar (early September 2026) and exclude your bank's card margin, which typically adds 3–6%. Semrush's own toolkit limits pages still reference the retired Pro / Guru / Business names in places, so if you see conflicting numbers, the live checkout screen is what governs.

✔ Strengths

Deepest per-keyword data anywhere · intent labels · SERP feature detection · Bangladesh database · free Semrush Academy access.

✘ Weaknesses

10 requests and 10 rows per day makes production work impossible · no gap analysis on free · by far the most expensive upgrade · overwhelming for beginners.

Verdict: treat the free account as a reference desk, not a workshop. Use your ten daily requests to check the handful of keywords you have already shortlisted elsewhere. We compare the two big suites head to head in our Ahrefs vs Semrush breakdown.

6. Keyword Tool (keywordtool.io) — best no-signup long-tail machine

Keyword Tool takes a different approach: instead of licensing a keyword database, it scrapes Google Autocomplete in real time. That means it surfaces phrases that never make it into Keyword Planner at all — including the messy, specific, spoken-language queries that convert best.

The free version needs no account. Type a seed, choose from 190+ Google domains and 120+ languages, and it returns up to 750+ suggestions in seconds. It works across YouTube, Bing, Amazon, and a dozen other platforms besides Google, which makes it the most versatile idea generator here.

The trade-off is data. The free tier shows suggestions and, for some keywords, partial volume data — the full volume, CPC and competition metrics sit behind Keyword Tool Pro. As a 2026 addition, the paid tiers now include an MCP server, letting AI coding assistants pull keyword data directly into an automated workflow. That is a genuinely forward-looking feature and, so far, a rare one.

Verdict: unbeatable for volume of ideas with zero friction. Pipe its output into Keyword Planner or Bing Webmaster Tools to attach numbers.

7. Question tools: AnswerThePublic, Answer Socrates and AlsoAsked

Question research deserves its own category in 2026, because questions are what AI assistants answer. These three do the same job from different data sources.

Tool Data source Free limit Paid from
AnswerThePublic Autocomplete across Google, YouTube, Bing, Amazon, TikTok, Instagram 3 searches/day, no signup, PNG + 30-keyword CSV $11/mo
Answer Socrates Google, Bing and Google Trends combined Unlimited + CSV export n/a for core use
AlsoAsked Google "People Also Ask" trees 3 searches/day, PNG download only $15/mo

AnswerThePublic's flywheel visualisation is the prettiest way anyone has found to look at a topic, and it now includes an AI Models view that shows intent across major assistants. But three searches a day is genuinely limiting, and its free tier withholds search volume entirely.

Answer Socrates is the value pick. It returns more questions per search than either competitor, allows unlimited searches, and is the only one of the three that lets free users export to CSV. If you are building content briefs at any volume, start here and use your three ATP searches for the visual you will actually put in a client deck.

AlsoAsked is worth the daily three because PAA data is structurally different from autocomplete data — it shows how one question leads to another, which is exactly the hierarchy you want when planning a pillar page and its supporting cluster.

Google Trends never gives you an absolute number. It gives you a relative interest index from 0 to 100, and people dismiss it for that reason. They should not, because it answers three questions no volume tool can.

  • Is this keyword growing or dying? A term with 5,000 monthly searches trending down for eighteen months is a worse bet than a term with 1,200 trending sharply up.
  • When does demand peak? Bangladesh has strong seasonal search cycles — Eid, admission season, Pohela Boishakh, the monsoon. Publishing six weeks ahead of the curve is worth more than any on-page tweak.
  • Where in Bangladesh is the demand? Trends drills down to division and city level, which is how you decide whether "SEO agency Sylhet" deserves its own page or is a waste of a URL.

Its comparison feature is the single fastest way to settle an argument about two phrasings. Put digital marketing course against ডিজিটাল মার্কেটিং কোর্স with Bangladesh selected, and you get a defensible answer in ten seconds.

9 & 10. Moz Keyword Explorer and Mangools KWFinder

Moz Keyword Explorer

A free Moz account has historically included around 10 keyword queries per month, each returning a large suggestion set from a database Moz puts above 1.25 billion keywords. Some 2026 reports say the allowance has been cut to three; Moz has been tightening this quietly, so check the number you are given rather than the number you read.

What makes those few queries worth spending is the Priority score — a composite of volume, difficulty and organic click-through rate. It is the most sensible single number in free keyword research, because it accounts for the fact that a high-volume keyword with a huge AI Overview and six ad slots may deliver almost no organic clicks. Moz Pro starts at $49/month if you outgrow it.

Mangools KWFinder

KWFinder has the most readable interface in the category and one of the better-regarded keyword difficulty models. Mangools operates a permanent free plan with very low limits plus a 10-day Free+ trial with elevated limits and no credit card required. The Free+ window, not the permanent tier, is the real evaluation offer — use it deliberately on two or three actual projects rather than poking around.

On pricing, be careful what you read. Mangools Basic currently sits around $49/month billed monthly, or roughly $29.90/month billed annually — a long way from the $61/month figure still quoted in several current roundups. The suite bundles KWFinder, SERPChecker, SERPWatcher, LinkMiner and SiteProfiler on every tier; higher tiers raise limits rather than unlock features.

Where the top-ranking 2026 roundups get it wrong

This is the part most articles skip, so it is worth being explicit. We checked the claims made by the pages currently ranking for this keyword against the vendors' own live pages. Several do not hold up.

Commonly repeated claim What we found in September 2026
"Semrush paid plans start at $139.95/month for Pro." Pro, Guru and Business are no longer selectable for new buyers. The current ladder is SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. Semrush's own limits documentation still references the retired names in places, which is why the error spreads.
"KWFinder paid plans start at $61/month." Mangools Basic is around $49/month monthly, or roughly $29.90/month on annual billing. The $61 figure appears to be a legacy price.
"AnswerThePublic paid plans start at $20/month." The Individual plan is $11/month. The free tier is 3 searches per day with no search volume data — that part is accurate.
"Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is the free Ahrefs account." Correct in substance, outdated in name. It is now branded Ahrefs Free, and a $29/month Starter tier now sits between it and the full suite.
"Search Console now lets you filter AI Mode queries." The generative-AI reports launched 3 June 2026 show impressions only — no clicks, no CTR, no query-level data, and no API or BigQuery export. Query-level AI reporting does not exist officially.
"Ubersuggest's free tier gives you plenty of daily searches." The most volatile entry in the category. 2026 reports range from roughly 3 web-app searches per day to no free tier at all, depending on when the writer checked. Do not build a workflow on it.

None of this is a swipe at those publications — free tiers change constantly and articles age. It is a reminder that you should verify any free limit on the vendor's page before you plan around it, including the ones in this article.

Keyword research for Bangladesh: what global tools miss

Every tool above supports Bangladesh as a location. Almost nobody configures them for it. Here is what changes when you do.

Bangla, Banglish and English are three different keyword sets

Bangladeshi searchers do not behave as one audience. In practice they split three ways, and each split needs its own research pass:

Query type Example Typical intent Competition
English digital marketing agency in Dhaka Commercial, B2B, professional services Highest
Banglish (Bangla in Latin script) freelancing kivabe shikhbo Informational, mobile-typed, younger Very low
Bangla script ফ্রিল্যান্সিং কিভাবে শিখব Informational, how-to, voice search Low

The pattern holds across niches: English dominates commercial and service queries; Bangla and Banglish dominate informational ones and face a fraction of the competition. Bengali is spoken by well over 200 million people and remains dramatically underserved in search. A well-written Bangla how-to article can rank in weeks where its English equivalent would take a year.

THE BANGLISH BLIND SPOT

Here is the gap almost nobody exploits. Keyword tools index Banglish queries poorly because they look like misspellings to a language classifier. Keyword Planner may report near-zero volume for freelancing kivabe shikhbo while Google Autocomplete happily suggests it.

The workaround: use Keyword Tool or Google Autocomplete directly for Banglish discovery — autocomplete reflects real typed behaviour, not a licensed database — then place those phrases in H3 subheadings and FAQ questions rather than trying to force them into your H1. You capture the query without breaking the readability of the page.

Location modifiers multiply a single keyword into many

One service keyword becomes five rankable pages the moment you add geography. "SEO service" is a bloodbath; "SEO service in Chattogram" is often wide open. Divisional cities — Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barishal, Rangpur, Mymensingh — each carry real search volume, and Google Trends will tell you which of them justify a dedicated page rather than a section.

Paying for an upgrade from Bangladesh

This is the practical wall most Bangladeshi marketers hit, and no global roundup addresses it. None of these tools accept bKash, Nagad or Rocket. Every paid plan requires an international card, which means one of:

  • A dual-currency card from a local bank with an endorsed USD quota against your passport — the standard route, but the annual travel quota caps how much you can spend.
  • A virtual dollar card from a bank or fintech, funded from your endorsement quota.
  • Payoneer, if you already earn in foreign currency as a freelancer — usually the smoothest path, since you are spending money that never entered the local banking system.

Budget 3–6% above the sticker price for your issuer's currency margin. At roughly ৳123 to the dollar in early September 2026, a $139/month subscription lands nearer ৳17,500–18,000 by the time it hits your statement. That is a real monthly cost against a Bangladeshi agency's margins, and it is precisely why building a competent free stack first is not a compromise — it is the correct sequence.

The free stack: a 6-step workflow that replaces a paid tool

Individually, none of these tools is complete. Chained in the right order, they cover almost everything a single subscription would. Here is the sequence we use, and roughly how long each step takes.

  1. Harvest ideas (10 min). Run your seed through Keyword Tool and the Ahrefs Keyword Generator. Add Answer Socrates for questions. You should finish with 200–600 raw candidates in a spreadsheet.
  2. Attach demand (15 min). Paste the shortlist into Google Keyword Planner with Location set to Bangladesh. Use the Forecast tab to tighten the ranges. Run the same list through Bing Webmaster Tools for exact comparative numbers.
  3. Filter by difficulty (10 min). Take your top 20–30 back to the Ahrefs Keyword Generator for Keyword Difficulty. If your site is newer, discard anything above roughly KD 30 and revisit it once you have authority.
  4. Check direction and seasonality (5 min). Drop your final candidates into Google Trends with Bangladesh selected. Kill anything on a sustained decline. Note peak months and work backwards to a publish date.
  5. Read the SERP by hand (10 min). Actually search your keyword. What format ranks — listicle, guide, product page? Is there an AI Overview? How many ads sit above the fold? This step is free, takes ten minutes, and is skipped more often than any other.
  6. Cross-reference Search Console (5 min). Before writing anything new, check whether you already have a page sitting at position 8–20 for something close. Updating it will almost always beat starting from zero.

That is roughly an hour per topic cluster, entirely free. The gaps it leaves are real but narrow: no automated clustering, no rank tracking over time, no competitor keyword gap analysis, and no bulk processing. Those four things are what you are actually buying when you upgrade.

When free stops being enough — and what it costs in taka

Upgrade when the free stack costs you more in hours than the subscription costs in money, not before. Concretely, these are the signals:

  • You are managing more than two or three sites and need rank tracking you do not have to rebuild manually every week.
  • You need keyword gap analysis — seeing what competitors rank for that you do not. No free tool does this, and it is the single most valuable paid feature.
  • You are producing enough content that hitting daily limits is a weekly occurrence rather than an occasional annoyance.
  • You are billing clients, and the reporting that comes with a paid suite is part of what they are paying for.
Cheapest credible upgrade Monthly USD Approx. BDT What it unlocks over free
Ahrefs Starter $29 ~৳3,600 Real keyword research volume and competitor visibility at the lowest entry price of any major suite
Mangools Basic (annual) ~$29.90 ~৳3,700 100 daily lookups, rank tracking, five bundled tools, the friendliest interface here
Moz Pro Starter $49 ~৳6,000 Unrestricted Priority scoring, Domain Authority tracking, link research
Semrush SEO $139 ~৳17,000 Keyword Gap, full Magic Tool access, site audit, position tracking, content tools

BDT conversions at roughly ৳123/USD, early September 2026, before card margins. Verify live pricing before purchase — every figure in this table moved at least once during 2026.

For most Bangladeshi bloggers, freelancers and small agencies, Ahrefs Starter at $29 is the honest recommendation once free stops working. It is the only entry-level plan that gives you a top-tier database rather than a budget one, and at roughly ৳3,600 it sits within reach of a single client retainer.

Keyword research in the age of AI Overviews and AI Mode

The uncomfortable truth of 2026: search volume matters less than it used to, and click-through potential matters far more. With AI Overviews appearing on close to half of Google queries and click-through rates dropping substantially when they do, a keyword's headline number no longer tells you what traffic it will send.

Three adjustments follow from that.

Prioritise queries an AI summary cannot resolve

"What is keyword research" is answered completely inside an AI Overview; nobody clicks. "Best free keyword research tools tested" requires judgement, comparison and opinion — the kind of query where users still open sources. Shift your keyword mix toward comparison, review, opinion, local, and transactional terms, and away from pure definitional ones.

Treat question keywords as prompts

Question-format keywords have quietly become the most valuable category, because they are what people type into ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Bing Webmaster Tools' Question filter, AlsoAsked's PAA trees and Answer Socrates' unlimited exports are all free ways to build that list. Structure your article so each question gets a direct, self-contained answer in the first two sentences beneath its heading — that is what gets extracted and cited.

Do not expect free tools to measure AI visibility

Search Console's June 2026 AI reports are impressions-only and offer no query breakdown, no API access and no BigQuery export. Dedicated AI-visibility tracking is a paid category right now. If you need to know whether ChatGPT cites your brand, no free tool will tell you reliably — and any article claiming otherwise is selling something.

Can you just use ChatGPT or Claude for keyword research?

For brainstorming, clustering and intent classification — yes, and they are good at it. For numbers — no. Language models do not have live search volume data, and when they produce figures they are pattern-matching rather than reporting. Use an assistant to organise and expand your list, then attach real volumes from Keyword Planner or Bing. Never publish a keyword strategy built on numbers a chatbot invented.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best free keyword research tool?

Google Keyword Planner, because the data comes from Google rather than an estimate of it — and it is free forever with no usage cap. But it hides exact volumes from accounts without ad spend, so pair it with Bing Webmaster Tools, which gives exact numbers at no cost. Those two together beat any single tool.

Can I do proper keyword research without paying anything at all?

Yes, and it is what most successful Bangladeshi blogs were built on. The six-step workflow above takes about an hour per topic cluster and costs nothing. What you genuinely cannot do for free is competitor keyword gap analysis, automated clustering, and rank tracking at scale.

Do free keyword tools work for Bangladesh?

All ten support Bangladesh as a location. Coverage quality varies: Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends are strongest, Semrush and Ahrefs carry solid Bangladesh databases, and Bing's Bangladesh sample is thinner so very long-tail Bangla terms may return nothing. Always set both Location and Language explicitly — leaving Language on English hides Bangla demand entirely.

Free keyword research tool ki Bangla keyword er data dey?

Ha, dey — kintu apnake manually setting change korte hobe. Google Keyword Planner-e Language "English" theke "Bengali" korun, ar Location "Bangladesh" set korun. Tarpor same seed keyword abar cholan — Bangla script-er result puropuri alada ashbe. Banglish keyword (jemon "freelancing kivabe shikhbo") er jonno Keyword Planner bhorosajogyo noy; Google Autocomplete ba Keyword Tool use korun, karon oigulo asol typed behaviour dekhay.

Is Google Keyword Planner still free in 2026?

Completely. You need a Google Ads account to reach it, but you never have to run ads or enter billing details — create the account in Expert Mode and skip campaign creation. The only thing ad spend changes is whether volumes appear as exact numbers or as ranges.

Why do different tools show completely different search volumes?

Because only Google Keyword Planner reports Google's own data. Every other tool models volume from clickstream panels, autocomplete scraping, or licensed third-party datasets, then extrapolates. Two tools can differ by 3–5x on the same keyword and both be defensible. Use one tool consistently for relative comparison rather than treating any single figure as truth.

What keyword difficulty score should a new Bangladeshi site target?

Below roughly 30 on the Ahrefs or Mangools scale, at least for the first six months. Difficulty models are built from the link profiles of ranking pages, so a new domain with few backlinks realistically competes only at the low end. Bangla and Banglish informational queries often score in single digits, which is exactly why they are the fastest route to first rankings.

Does search volume still matter with AI Overviews everywhere?

Less than it did. AI Overviews now appear on close to half of Google queries, and when one triggers, organic click-through drops substantially. A keyword's volume tells you how often it is searched, not how often anyone clicks a result. Weight your selection toward comparison, review, local and transactional queries, where users still need to leave the summary.

Can I pay for a tool from Bangladesh using bKash or Nagad?

No. None of these vendors accept local mobile financial services. You need a dual-currency card with an endorsed USD quota, a virtual dollar card funded from that quota, or a Payoneer balance if you earn in foreign currency. Budget 3–6% above the sticker price for your card issuer's margin.

Which free tool should I set up first if I only have an hour?

Google Search Console, then Bing Webmaster Tools — both require site verification, which is the only step with any delay. Once those are running they collect data in the background. Everything else on this list works instantly whenever you need it.

The verdict

There is no best free keyword research tool, and any article that names one is simplifying to fit a headline. There is a best free stack, and it costs nothing to assemble.

THE STACK, IN ORDER

  1. Google Keyword Planner — first-party demand data, unlimited, free forever.
  2. Bing Webmaster Tools — the only free source of exact volumes, and the biggest gap in every competing roundup.
  3. Google Search Console — your real keywords, plus striking-distance wins you already own.
  4. Ahrefs Keyword Generator — free difficulty scores, no signup required.
  5. Google Trends + Answer Socrates — direction, seasonality, and unlimited question research.

Set those five up this week. Work the six-step process for one topic cluster. If after a month you are hitting walls that cost you more time than ৳3,600 is worth, upgrade to Ahrefs Starter — and not before.

And whichever tools you land on, remember the part no tool does for you: open the actual search results and read them. The SERP tells you what Google has already decided the right answer looks like. That has always been free, and it is still the most reliable signal on this page.
