Last verified: 17 September 2026 | Prices in USD with Bangladesh taka estimates | No affiliate links in this comparison
Search "ahrefs vs semrush" and you will find page after page declaring a winner, usually with a trial link attached and pricing that was copied from an old screenshot. The honest answer in 2026 is more useful than a single winner: Ahrefs is the sharper tool for link research and competitive SEO, while Semrush is the broader platform for teams that also need rank tracking every day, local SEO, PPC data and AI visibility reporting. Which one is worth it depends on the work you actually do every week, and on what the subscription really costs once it lands on a Bangladeshi card.
This comparison was rebuilt from scratch for 2026. We checked current plan prices, the April 2026 Adobe acquisition of Semrush, the new AI visibility tools on both sides, and the 15% VAT that Bangladeshi banks apply to foreign software payments. We also flag the pricing mistakes currently repeated in top-ranking comparison pages, so you do not budget from a wrong number.
THE 30-SECOND VERDICT
Choose by workflow, not by brand.
Pick Ahrefs if…
backlinks, competitor research and content prospecting are your core work, and you want a cleaner interface. Budget for Standard ($249/month) if you research daily, because Lite has a credit cap.
Pick Semrush if…
you manage client sites and need daily rank tracking, reporting, local SEO or PPC research, or you want AI visibility tracking bundled in. Semrush One Starter ($199/month) is the best-value bundle.
Pick neither (yet) if…
you run one new blog with little traffic. Google Search Console, Ahrefs Free and the Semrush free account cover the basics until your site earns enough to justify a paid tool.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Entry prices are closer than they look: Ahrefs starts at $29/month (Starter) and Semrush SEO Classic Pro at $139.95/month, but the plans most professionals actually use sit at $129–$249 (Ahrefs) and $139.95–$299 (Semrush).
- Ahrefs wins on link data and research depth; Semrush wins on breadth, daily rank tracking, local and PPC toolkits, and reporting.
- AI visibility is the new battleground: Semrush bundles its AI Visibility Toolkit into Semrush One; Ahrefs includes a small Brand Radar allowance and sells the full Brand Radar AI from $199/month.
- Semrush is now owned by Adobe (deal completed 28 April 2026). Ahrefs remains independent.
- In Bangladesh, add roughly 15% on top of the listed price, because banks withhold VAT on card payments to foreign digital services. A $129 plan costs around Tk 18,200 a month, before any bank conversion margin.
- Free trial: Semrush offers a 7-day trial (card required). Ahrefs offers no trial on paid plans.
Ahrefs vs Semrush at a glance
Both are mature, professional SEO platforms with keyword research, backlink analysis, site audits and rank tracking. The difference is focus. Ahrefs was built around its crawler and link index and still behaves like a specialist research tool. Semrush grew into a multi-toolkit marketing platform where SEO is one part of a larger subscription menu.

|---|---|---|---|

What changed in 2026 (and why older comparisons mislead)
If you read an Ahrefs vs Semrush article written before this year, several of its core assumptions are now outdated. These are the changes that actually affect a buying decision:
OWNERSHIP
Adobe now owns Semrush
Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, in an all-cash deal first announced in November 2025 at $12 per share (about $1.9 billion). Adobe says it will connect Semrush with products such as Adobe Experience Manager and its LLM Optimizer. For buyers, the practical question is how plans and bundling evolve over the next year.
PACKAGING
Semrush One is the new default bundle
Semrush now sells two families: SEO Classic (Pro, Guru, Business) and Semrush One (Starter, Pro+, Advanced), which adds the AI Visibility Toolkit. Starter at $199/month is cheaper than buying Pro plus the $99 AI toolkit separately ($238.95).
AI VISIBILITY
Ahrefs pushes into AI search
Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks how brands appear in AI answers. Ahrefs says its index covers more than 455 million prompts across seven AI indexes, including AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Every main plan now includes a small tracked-prompt allowance.
PRICING
A real low-cost Ahrefs entry
The $29/month Starter plan gives limited access to core Ahrefs data. Many 2026 articles still say Ahrefs "starts at $129", which is no longer true. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools has also been folded into Ahrefs Free.
Ahrefs vs Semrush pricing (current plans)
Prices below are the monthly billing rates, with the annual-billing monthly equivalent in brackets. Both vendors discount annual billing by about 17% (Ahrefs frames it as two months free). Always confirm at checkout, because add-ons and seats change the final bill.
Ahrefs plans
| Plan | Price | Projects / tracked keywords | History | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/month (monthly only) | Limited; not in the main comparison table | Limited | Testing Ahrefs data or occasional checks |
| Lite | $129 ($107.50 annual) | 5 projects / 750 keywords | 6 months | Solo SEOs with light research (credit cap applies) |
| Standard | $249 ($207.50 annual) | 20 projects / 2,000 keywords | 2 years | Freelancers and teams researching daily; unlimited credits |
| Advanced | $449 ($374.17 annual) | 50 projects / 5,000 keywords | 5 years | Agencies needing Looker Studio and deeper history |
| Enterprise | $1,499/month, annual commitment | Custom | Unlimited | Large teams needing SSO, audit logs, uncapped API |
Semrush plans
| Plan | Price | Projects / tracked keywords | Includes AI Visibility? | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO Classic Pro | $139.95 ($117.33 annual) | 5 projects / 500 keywords | No ($99 add-on) | Freelancers and small sites |
| SEO Classic Guru | $249.95 ($208.33 annual) | 15 projects / 1,500 keywords | No ($99 add-on) | Content teams needing history and content tools |
| SEO Classic Business | $499.95 ($416.66 annual) | 40 projects / 5,000 keywords | No ($99 add-on) | Agencies needing API and Share of Voice |
| Semrush One Starter | $199 ($165.17 annual) | Pro-level SEO limits | Yes | Solo SEOs who also track AI answers |
| Semrush One Pro+ | $299 ($248.17 annual) | Guru-level SEO limits | Yes | Growing agencies and in-house teams |
| Semrush One Advanced | $549 ($455.67 annual) | Business-level SEO limits | Yes | Large agencies and enterprise SEO |
The costs that pricing pages do not put in the headline
| Hidden cost | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Extra users | $40 (Lite), $60 (Standard), $80 (Advanced), $100 (Enterprise) per month | Roughly $45–$100 per month per seat, depending on plan |
| Usage limits | Starter and Lite run on a monthly credit cap; Standard and above are unlimited | Daily report and per-report result limits rise by plan |
| AI visibility | Brand Radar AI from $199/month; custom prompt packs $50, $100 or $250 | AI Visibility Toolkit $99/month (included in Semrush One) |
| Content tools | Content Kit from $99/month | Content Toolkit $60/month |
| Reporting | Report Builder $99/month | Reporting included; white-label options by plan |
| Faster rank updates | Project Boost Pro $20 or Max $200 per project per month | Daily updates already included |
| Local and ads data | No dedicated toolkit | Local $30–$60 per location; Advertising toolkit $99/month |
Pricing reality check: the cheapest plan is rarely the cheapest option. A freelancer who opens reports all day will hit the Ahrefs Lite credit cap, so Standard ($249) is the realistic Ahrefs budget. On the Semrush side, if you want AI visibility at all, Semrush One Starter ($199) beats Pro plus the AI add-on by about $40 a month.
What Ahrefs and Semrush really cost in Bangladesh
No major comparison page accounts for this, but it changes the budget meaningfully. When you pay a foreign software company with a Bangladeshi international or dual-currency card, the bank withholds 15% VAT on the payment. The Finance Act 2026, effective 1 July 2026, also widened the reverse-charge VAT on imported services, so businesses should keep the treasury challan their bank issues for VAT records. On top of that, your bank applies its own card conversion rate, which is usually worse than the mid-market rate.
The estimates below use about Tk 123 per US dollar (mid-market, mid-September 2026) plus 15% VAT. Treat them as the minimum you will see on your statement.
| Plan | USD (monthly billing) | With 15% VAT, per month | Annual billing, full year with VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Starter | $29 | About Tk 4,100 | Not available (monthly only) |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 | About Tk 18,250 | About Tk 1,82,470 ($1,290/year) |
| Ahrefs Standard | $249 | About Tk 35,220 | About Tk 3,52,210 ($2,490/year) |
| Semrush SEO Classic Pro | $139.95 | About Tk 19,800 | About Tk 1,99,160 ($1,407.96/year) |
| Semrush SEO Classic Guru | $249.95 | About Tk 35,360 | About Tk 3,53,620 ($2,499.96/year) |
| Semrush One Starter | $199 | About Tk 28,150 | About Tk 2,80,360 ($1,982.04/year) |
Estimates only. Your card issuer’s exchange rate and fees will change the final amount. Annual billing totals use each vendor’s annual price.
Warning about "group buy" SEO tools
Facebook groups and local sites sell shared Ahrefs and Semrush logins for a few hundred taka a month. They are tempting, but shared access breaks both vendors’ terms, accounts get locked without warning, you cannot connect your own Google Search Console or set up private projects safely, and you are handing client domains to an unknown operator. For client work, it is also a professional risk: if a client asks for a report from their own account, you cannot produce one. A legitimate Ahrefs Starter plan at about Tk 4,100 is a safer low-cost option.
Tips for Bangladeshi buyers
- Check your card limit first. Annual plans are a single large USD charge and may exceed the international spending limit on your card. Monthly billing avoids a declined payment.
- Use free data for local queries. Search volumes for low-volume Bangladesh queries are thin in every third-party tool. Your own Google Search Console data is still the most reliable source for what Bangladeshi users actually search.
- Freelancers can pass the cost on. If you sell SEO services on Fiverr or Upwork, price the subscription into client retainers rather than buying the biggest plan up front.
- Start monthly, then switch. Use one month to confirm the tool fits your workflow, then move to annual billing to save about 17%.
Keyword research: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer vs Semrush Keyword Magic Tool
Both tools have huge keyword databases, and the headline numbers are close: each vendor claims somewhere around 27 to 29 billion keywords, counted in different ways. Database size should not decide your purchase. What matters is how quickly each tool turns a seed keyword into a publishable topic list. If you are new to the process itself, start with our step-by-step keyword research guide.
AHREFS
Keywords Explorer
Strong at showing the real opportunity behind a keyword.
- Traffic Potential estimates what the top page earns from all its rankings, not just one term.
- Parent Topic tells you whether a keyword deserves its own page or belongs inside a broader article.
- Keyword clustering, AI keyword suggestions and intent data are on Standard and above.
- Filter keywords by category to cut noise quickly.
SEMRUSH
Keyword Magic Tool
Strong at volume of ideas and planning.
- Groups huge suggestion lists into topic subgroups automatically.
- Personal Keyword Difficulty estimates how hard a keyword is for your domain, not a generic site.
- Keyword Strategy Builder turns lists into pillar and cluster plans.
- Intent labels on every keyword, even on lower plans.
Round winner: TIE Ahrefs is better at judging whether a keyword is worth a page; Semrush is better at generating and organising large idea lists. Beginners on a budget should read our list of free keyword research tools before paying for either.
Backlink analysis: still Ahrefs’ home ground
Backlink research is where Ahrefs built its reputation, and in 2026 it still leads for day-to-day link work. According to Cloudflare Radar data cited by Ahrefs in July 2026, AhrefsBot is the most active crawler in the SEO category, and Ahrefs says it updates backlink and referring domain data daily. Its Domain Rating (DR) is the authority metric most link buyers, guest post sites and outreach teams quote.
Semrush reports a larger raw number (43 trillion backlinks against Ahrefs’ 35 trillion live backlinks). These figures are not like-for-like: Ahrefs states Semrush’s count mixes live and dead links, and comparison pages report very different referring-domain totals for Ahrefs. What Semrush genuinely does better is the workflow after the research: its Backlink Audit flags risky links, and the Link Building Tool manages outreach prospects inside the same account.
| Link task | Ahrefs | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a competitor’s best links | Best Links filter, broken backlink reports (Standard+) | Backlink Analytics with Authority Score |
| Spotting new and lost links fast | Daily updates, backlink spike alerts | Regular updates, less emphasis on real-time |
| Link prospecting | Content Explorer (20.3B+ pages, Standard+) | Link Building Tool with outreach tracking |
| Cleaning a bad link profile | Manual review | Backlink Audit with toxicity scoring |
Round winner: AHREFS For link prospecting and competitor link research, Ahrefs remains the better tool. Choose Semrush if you want link auditing and outreach managed in one place.
Technical site audit
Both crawlers are good enough for most sites, and neither replaces a proper technical SEO audit process. Ahrefs Site Audit offers always-on audits with issue alerts and lets you compare HTML and page text between crawls, which helps when a developer change breaks something. Crawl capacity scales with the plan: 100,000 crawl credits on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced. Site owners can also run it free on verified sites through Ahrefs Free.
Semrush Site Audit runs a larger visible list of checks (140+), gives a clear Site Health score, and explains each issue in plain language, which makes it easier to hand to a client or junior developer. Its reports also slot into Semrush’s wider client reporting.
Round winner: TIE Ahrefs is better for monitoring and change detection; Semrush is easier to explain to clients. For a single site you own, Ahrefs Free is the best no-cost option.
Rank tracking
This is one of the clearest differences. Semrush Position Tracking updates rankings daily on every paid plan, supports device and location targeting, and can track any location even where a country keyword database is limited. Ahrefs Rank Tracker updates less often by default; you pay for Project Boost (Pro $20 or Max $200 per project, per month) to get more frequent updates and extra features.
Tracked keyword allowances are similar at the top: 5,000 on Ahrefs Advanced and Semrush Business. Lower down, Ahrefs Lite gives 750 keywords against 500 on Semrush Pro. For a full breakdown of free and paid methods, see our guide on how to track keyword rankings.
Round winner: SEMRUSH Daily updates included by default make Semrush the better rank tracker for client reporting and fast-moving sites.
AI visibility tracking: the new deciding factor
In 2026, ranking on Google is only part of visibility. Buyers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews, and both tools have built products to show whether your brand appears in those answers.
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Small allowance in plans (5, 10 or 20 tracked AI prompts on Lite, Standard, Advanced); Brand Radar AI from $199/month | $99/month add-on on SEO Classic plans, or included in every Semrush One plan |
| Approach | Enter any brand and see its visibility across a large pre-built prompt index | Track the prompts you choose and monitor mentions over time |
| Platforms | Ahrefs lists AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity | ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Gemini |
| Stand-out feature | Instant brand benchmarking without building prompt lists | Brand perception and sentiment analysis |
| Pricing caution | Ahrefs shows different Brand Radar prices on different pages; confirm at checkout | Bundle saves money versus buying the add-on separately |
Round winner: SEMRUSH For most buyers Semrush delivers AI visibility at a lower total cost, especially through Semrush One. Ahrefs is stronger for quick competitive benchmarking across many AI platforms if you can afford Brand Radar AI.
Content, local SEO and PPC: where Semrush pulls ahead
If your job goes beyond organic search, Semrush simply offers more. It sells separate toolkits for local SEO (listings, Google Business Profile and map rankings, from $30 per location per month), advertising research ($99/month), content ($60/month), social media ($20/month) and traffic and market intelligence. Ahrefs deliberately stays SEO-focused: it has ads history for keywords and a Content Kit (from $99/month) with AI writing and grading tools, but no dedicated local SEO or PPC toolkit.
For a Bangladeshi digital agency that runs Meta and Google ads alongside SEO, or manages Google Business Profiles for local shops and clinics, that breadth can replace several separate subscriptions. For a link-building freelancer, it is mostly features you will never open.
Round winner: SEMRUSH Semrush is the clear choice when SEO is one part of a wider marketing service.

What other Ahrefs vs Semrush comparisons get wrong
We reviewed the comparison pages currently ranking for this keyword. Several repeat errors that could lead you to budget or choose incorrectly:
| Claim found in ranking pages | What is actually true (September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Semrush One Starter costs "$165.17/month" and Ahrefs Lite "$108/month", presented as monthly billing rates | Those are annual-billing equivalents. Monthly billing is $199 for Semrush One Starter and $129 for Ahrefs Lite. |
| Semrush Business costs $449.95/month | SEO Classic Business is $499.95/month ($416.66 on annual billing). |
| Ahrefs’ entry-level plan is the $129 Lite plan | Ahrefs sells a $29/month Starter plan, and Ahrefs Free covers verified sites at no cost. |
| Ahrefs API access requires the $1,499 Enterprise plan | Ahrefs advertises API access on all paid plans with usage limits; Enterprise adds uncapped API rows. The same page making this claim also says API starts on Standard. |
| "Semrush wins overall for 2025", published as a 2026 comparison | Year-old verdicts ignore Semrush One, Ahrefs’ $29 Starter plan and the Adobe acquisition completed in April 2026. |
| Semrush’s 43 trillion backlinks make it the bigger, better link index | Raw counts are not comparable. Ahrefs reports 35 trillion live links, and link freshness and filtering matter more than the headline total. |
Which tool should you choose?
| If you are… | Choose | Recommended plan | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new blogger with under 10k monthly visits | Neither yet | Free tools, or Ahrefs Starter $29 | Search Console plus free accounts cover early needs. Spend on content first. |
| A niche site or affiliate blogger | Ahrefs | Starter, then Lite | Traffic Potential and Parent Topic help you pick winnable topics fast. |
| An SEO freelancer doing link building | Ahrefs | Standard $249 | Best link data and Content Explorer, with no credit cap. |
| A freelancer selling full SEO packages | Semrush | Semrush One Starter $199 | Daily rank tracking, client-friendly audits and AI visibility in one bill. |
| A local business or local SEO agency | Semrush | Pro + Local toolkit | Google Business Profile and map rank tracking are not available in Ahrefs. |
| An agency also running PPC | Semrush | Guru or Semrush One Pro+ | Ads research, reporting and multi-client management in one platform. |
| An enterprise SEO team | Both, often | Advanced tiers | Many large teams keep Ahrefs for links and Semrush for tracking and reporting. |
Still undecided? A useful test is to run the same competitor through both tools and ask which report led you to an action you would actually take this week. Budget-conscious readers can also compare a lighter option in our Ubersuggest review.
Frequently asked questions about Ahrefs vs Semrush
Is Ahrefs or Semrush better in 2026?
Neither is better for everyone. Ahrefs is better for backlink research, competitor analysis and judging keyword opportunity. Semrush is better for daily rank tracking, local SEO, PPC research, reporting and bundled AI visibility tracking.
Which is cheaper, Ahrefs or Semrush?
Ahrefs has the cheapest paid entry at $29/month (Starter). For full professional use, the gap narrows: Ahrefs Standard is $249/month, while Semrush Guru is $249.95/month and Semrush One Starter is $199/month.
Does Ahrefs have a free trial?
No. Ahrefs does not offer a free trial on paid plans. You can use Ahrefs Free on websites you verify, or pay for one month of the $29 Starter plan to test the data.
Does Semrush have a free trial?
Yes. Semrush offers a 7-day free trial on selected plans, including Pro, Guru, Semrush One Starter and Pro+. A card is required and the plan renews automatically if you do not cancel.
Which tool is better for backlink analysis?
Ahrefs. Its link data updates daily, its Domain Rating is the most widely used authority metric, and Content Explorer is excellent for finding link prospects. Semrush is stronger for auditing risky links and managing outreach.
Which tool tracks AI search visibility better?
Semrush offers better value, with its AI Visibility Toolkit included in all Semrush One plans. Ahrefs Brand Radar is strong for instant competitive benchmarking across many AI platforms, but the full version costs extra from $199/month.
How much does Ahrefs or Semrush cost in Bangladesh?
Add about 15% VAT to the USD price, which banks withhold on foreign digital service payments. At around Tk 123 per dollar, Ahrefs Lite costs about Tk 18,250 a month and Semrush Pro about Tk 19,800, before your bank’s conversion margin.
Did Adobe buy Semrush?
Yes. Adobe completed its acquisition of Semrush on 28 April 2026, after announcing the deal in November 2025. Ahrefs remains an independent company.
Should a beginner buy Ahrefs or Semrush?
Most beginners do not need either on day one. Learn with Google Search Console and free tools, then choose Ahrefs Starter for low-cost research or Semrush if you want a guided, all-in-one platform with a trial.
Final verdict: which SEO tool is worth it?
Ahrefs is worth it when research quality is the product: link building, competitor analysis and picking topics that can actually rank. Semrush is worth it when SEO is part of a broader service that needs daily tracking, client reporting, local SEO, ads data and AI visibility in one subscription. Whichever you choose, budget for the plan you will really use, not the cheapest one on the page, and in Bangladesh add the 15% VAT before you commit.
