Few moments feel worse than patting your pocket on a crowded Dhaka bus and finding nothing there. Your phone holds your bKash wallet, your bank OTPs, your WhatsApp chats and years of photos — so knowing how to find a lost phone quickly, and how to lock it down when you can't, matters more in Bangladesh than almost anywhere else.

The good news: 2026 is the best year yet to lose a phone, if there is such a thing. Google's Find Hub and Apple's Find My are more powerful than ever, BTRC's National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) has been live since 1 January 2026 and lets owners block a stolen handset nationwide, and police cyber units across the country are returning recovered phones every month. This guide puts all of it into one Bangladesh-specific, step-by-step plan — built on official sources and current 2026 reporting, not recycled advice.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Speed beats everything: ring, locate and lock the phone within minutes — before a thief switches it off or pulls the SIM.
  • Android: use android.com/find (Find Hub) or lock instantly with just your number at android.com/lock. Samsung users also have Samsung Find.
  • iPhone: sign in at icloud.com/find and turn on Lost Mode — no verification code needed.
  • Protect your money first: block your SIM through your operator and call bKash (16247) or Nagad (16167) before worrying about the handset.
  • File a GD with your IMEI: police recovery units trace phones by IMEI from General Diary entries — no GD, no trace.
  • Use NEIR to block the handset: lock requests go through the official portal neir.btrc.gov.bd, the NEIR app, or your operator's customer care.

PHONE MISSING RIGHT NOW? DO THIS IN ORDER

  1. Call your number from a friend's phone and listen.
  2. Open android.com/find or icloud.com/find and play a sound or check the map.
  3. If it isn't within reach, lock it (Remote Lock / Mark as lost / Lost Mode).
  4. Call your operator on 121 and block the SIM.
  5. Call bKash 16247 or Nagad 16167 to suspend your wallet.
  6. File a GD with your IMEI number, then request an NEIR block.

If the phone was snatched and you are in danger, call 999 first. Don't chase the thief.

How to find a lost phone: the short answer

Short answer: Sign in to the account on the lost phone from any browser — android.com/find for Android or icloud.com/find for iPhone — to see it on a map, ring it, and lock it. In Bangladesh, then block your SIM and mobile wallets, file a General Diary (GD) with the phone's IMEI number, and request a handset block through BTRC's NEIR system so the phone can't be used on any local network.

Location tools only work if they were switched on before the phone went missing and the phone still has power. That's why the order of what you do next matters so much.

The first hour: 8 steps in the right order

Thieves in Bangladesh typically switch a phone off or eject the SIM within minutes. Work through these steps fast, and do the money-protection steps even if you think the phone is just misplaced.

STEP 1

Call it, then ring it remotely

Call your number from another phone first. If it's nearby but silent, use Play sound in Find Hub — it rings at full volume for five minutes even on silent — or Play Sound in Find My on iPhone.

STEP 2

Check the map

Sign in at android.com/find or icloud.com/find using a friend's phone or a computer. Note the location and the time it was last seen — you'll need these for the GD.

STEP 3

Lock it before anything else

On Android, go to android.com/lock and lock the screen with just your phone number, or use Secure device / Mark as lost in Find Hub. On iPhone, turn on Lost Mode. Add a contact number so an honest finder can reach you.

STEP 4

Block your SIM

Call your operator on 121 from another number and ask them to bar the SIM. A live SIM in a thief's hands can receive your bKash, Nagad and bank OTPs. Read our guide to SIM swap fraud to see why this step can't wait.

STEP 5

Freeze your mobile wallets and bank apps

Call bKash on 16247 or Nagad on 16167 and ask them to suspend your account. For bank apps, call the helpline on the back of your card.

STEP 6

Change your key passwords

From a trusted device, change your Google or Apple account password, then Facebook and email. Sign the lost phone out of active sessions. Our Google account security checkup walks through it in ten minutes.

STEP 7

File a GD with the IMEI

Report the loss through Bangladesh Police's Online GD app or at the nearest police station, and include your IMEI number. Police recovery units trace phones from GD entries.

STEP 8

Request an NEIR handset block

Submit a lost or stolen lock request through the NEIR Citizen Portal, the NEIR app or your operator's customer care centre. Once blocked, the handset won't work with any SIM on Bangladeshi networks. See the NEIR section for how and when to do it.

How to find a lost Android phone

Every Android phone signed in to a Google account — Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, Realme, Oppo, Vivo, Tecno, Infinix, Pixel and others — can use Google's Find Hub, the service previously called Find My Device. The Find Hub app works on Android 6 and above, while its crowdsourced Find Hub network, which can locate a phone even when it's offline, needs Android 9 or later.

Use Find Hub from any browser

  1. Go to android.com/find on a computer, or open the Find Hub app on a friend's Android phone and sign in as a guest.
  2. Sign in with the Google account used on the lost phone and select the device.
  3. Check the map, then choose Play sound, Secure device (lock it and show a message and contact number) or Factory reset device.

Pro tip: Can't sign in because your two-step codes go to the lost phone? Use android.com/lock instead. Remote Lock only needs your verified phone number, and if the phone is offline it locks the moment it reconnects. Set the optional security question now so nobody else can trigger it.

Keep factory reset as a last resort. Once you erase the phone, you can no longer see its location. Our guide to factory resetting Android the right way explains what a reset does and doesn't remove.

What Android's 2026 theft protection adds

Google has spent 2026 closing the gaps thieves used to exploit. These features live under Settings → Google → All services → Theft protection:

  • Theft Detection Lock uses motion sensors to spot a grab-and-run snatch and locks the screen automatically — highly relevant for rickshaw and bus snatchings.
  • Offline Device Lock locks the screen shortly after a thief cuts the connection with Airplane Mode or by pulling the SIM.
  • Identity Check requires your fingerprint or face, not just your PIN, for sensitive actions away from trusted places. In January 2026 Google extended it to banking apps and anything using Android's biometric prompt.
  • Android 17 upgrades: Android 17 began rolling out to Pixel phones in June 2026. Once a phone is marked as lost, it needs biometrics to unlock, hides Quick Settings and blocks new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, and Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock are switched on by default on new, reset or upgraded Android 17 devices. Other brands deliver Android 17 on their own schedules.

Bangladesh isn't among the markets where Google is switching these protections on for older Android versions, so on most phones here you still need to turn them on yourself.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy

Samsung owners get a second tracker on top of Find Hub. Samsung Find is a standalone app that replaced the old SmartThings Find section of the SmartThings app, and the website smartthingsfind.samsung.com still works from any browser. Sign in with your Samsung account to locate, ring, lock or erase the phone.

Its biggest advantage is Offline finding: other nearby Galaxy devices anonymously report your phone's location even with mobile data off, as long as it's switched on. To enable it, open Settings, search for Find My Mobile, and turn on both Allow this phone to be found and Offline finding. Accuracy is best in dense areas with many Galaxy users around.

How to find a lost iPhone

Apple's Find My works only if it was turned on before the iPhone went missing. If it was, you have three ways in: the Find My app on another Apple device signed in to your Apple Account, a Family Sharing member's device, or icloud.com/find in any browser.

  1. Go to icloud.com/find. You don't need a verification code, so it works even when the lost iPhone is your only trusted device.
  2. Select your iPhone under All Devices and play a sound if the map shows it nearby.
  3. Turn on Mark As Lost. This locks the phone with your passcode, suspends Apple Pay cards and lets you show a contact number on the screen.
  4. Erase remotely only when you've given up on recovery. If the phone is offline, the erase starts the next time it connects.

Never remove the iPhone from Find My, even after erasing it. Removing it switches off Activation Lock, which makes the phone far easier for a thief to unlock and resell. If you use Stolen Device Protection, Face ID or Touch ID is required to turn off Lost Mode, so even someone who watched you type your passcode stays locked out.

Afterwards, review your Apple Account at account.apple.com and change your password if you see anything you don't recognise.

How to block a lost or stolen phone with BTRC NEIR

This is the step no global guide covers. The National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) is BTRC's central database that links every handset's IMEI number to Bangladesh's mobile networks. It went live on 1 January 2026, and despite protests by mobile phone traders in the first week of January, the government confirmed the system would stay.

For theft victims, NEIR has one crucial feature: a handset reported lost or stolen shows up as "Stolen or Blocked" in the register, and it won't work with any SIM on any Bangladeshi operator. That kills most of its resale value.

Ways to request a lost or stolen lock

  • NEIR Citizen Portal: log in at neir.btrc.gov.bd using your NID-registered mobile number and submit a lock request for the lost handset.
  • NEIR mobile app: offers the same lock and unlock options.
  • Operator customer care centre: visit your Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink or Teletalk centre with your NID.
  • No internet? Use the NEIR USSD channel *16161#, call 121, or call BTRC's helpdesk on 100.

Keep your GD number, IMEI and purchase receipt ready, since you may be asked for them. Menu names on the portal can change, so follow the on-screen options. If you get the phone back, the same channels let you unlock it.

Block now or wait? A remote screen lock through Find Hub or Find My protects your data immediately and doesn't stop police tracing. An NEIR block makes the handset useless to a thief — but police recoveries rely on tracing the IMEI when the phone is used on a network. If recovering the phone matters to you, ask the officer handling your GD about timing. If your data or money is at risk, protect those first either way.

Check any phone's NEIR status

To check a handset, text KYD, a space and the 15-digit IMEI to 16002 (for example, KYD 123456789012345). Dual-SIM phones have two IMEIs, so check both. This is also the single best habit before buying a second-hand phone, because a stolen, blocked handset will show up immediately.

While you're at it, dial *16001# from a number registered to your NID and enter the last four digits of your NID. You'll receive an SMS listing every mobile number registered under your NID across all operators, so you can spot any SIM a fraudster registered in your name.

Only use neir.btrc.gov.bd. Several lookalike "NEIR BTRC" websites rank on Google in 2026. They aren't run by BTRC, and you should never enter your NID, OTP or IMEI details on them.

Filing a GD: online or at the police station?

A General Diary (GD) is what turns your loss into something police can act on. Bangladesh Police's Online GD service, available as an app and at gd.police.gov.bd, lets you report lost items from home. If your complaint qualifies as a GD, you receive the GD number, the investigating officer's details and a digital copy by SMS.

There's one distinction most guides miss. If your phone was snatched or stolen, that's a cognizable offence, and you may be asked to come to the police station to file a case rather than a simple GD.

Situation Best route What to bring or include
Misplaced or dropped phone Online GD app or gd.police.gov.bd IMEI, model and colour, SIM number, time and place last seen
Pickpocketed, not noticed at the time Online GD; police may ask you to visit Same details plus the route you travelled
Snatched or taken by force Call 999 if in danger, then go to the police station NID, IMEI, box or receipt, description of the incident and suspect
Located on Find Hub or Find My Share the location with the investigating officer Screenshots with the time and location visible

2026 recovery numbers: what actually happens after a GD

Police cyber units in Bangladesh recover and return lost phones every month — but only when a GD with the IMEI exists. On 17 September 2026, the 12 Armed Police Battalion reported recovering 3,165 phones in 22 months after investigating around 14,322 GDs, using call detail record analysis and IMEI tracing. It returned 132 phones in August alone.

Recovery is real, but it isn't instant — roughly one GD in five led to a returned phone in that battalion's figures. When Rajshahi Metropolitan Police handed back 125 phones in September 2026, the commissioner urged citizens to keep a record of their IMEI numbers. Khulna District Police made the same appeal about filing a GD immediately when it returned 50 phones in June 2026.

What to do when you can see where your phone is

  • Don't go alone. Confronting a thief over a phone isn't worth your safety. Take screenshots of the map with the time visible and share them with the officer handling your GD.
  • If it's somewhere public and safe, such as a café, office or your own building, play a sound and ask staff or security to help.
  • If an honest finder calls, meet in a public place such as a police station or shop counter.
  • Once it's back, remove any NEIR block, ask your operator to restore your number if you replaced the SIM, and check for unfamiliar apps or account changes. Our checklist on signs your phone is hacked helps you spot tampering.

If the phone is gone for good, get a replacement SIM. Grameenphone and the other operators require the SIM owner to be present with their NID for biometric verification. Restore your data from backup — our guide to backing up your Android phone completely shows what to switch on so the next loss hurts less.

Scams that target people who just lost a phone

A lost phone makes you a target twice. Watch for these:

  • Fake "your phone was found" messages. Apple states it will never contact you to say a lost iPhone has been found. These SMS messages lead to fake login pages built to steal your Apple ID or Google password and remove the lock.
  • Callers asking for your OTP or PIN. Someone claiming to be from bKash, Nagad, your operator or the police who asks for a code is a scammer. See our guide to OTP scams in Bangladesh.
  • "Track any phone by number or IMEI" apps and websites. Ordinary people can't trace a phone through its IMEI — that requires police and operator records. These sites collect your details or push paid subscriptions.
  • Hidden "phone monitoring" apps. Spy apps must be installed on a phone before it's lost, so they can't find a stolen handset. Using them secretly on someone else's phone is illegal, and you can check your own device with our stalkerware check guide.

We reviewed the pages currently ranking for this topic. Several contain outdated or misleading advice for a reader in Bangladesh in 2026:

What some guides say What's accurate in 2026
Use Google's Find My Device app. The service is now called Find Hub. Use the Find Hub app or android.com/find.
Samsung users should open the SmartThings app and tap the Find card in the Life tab. Samsung Find is now a standalone app that replaced SmartThings Find inside SmartThings. The website smartthingsfind.samsung.com still works.
Call your carrier to blacklist the phone. In Bangladesh, handset blocking runs through BTRC's NEIR system. Your operator bars the SIM and its customer care can help with the NEIR request.
Suspending your SIM ends any chance of tracking. Find Hub and Find My can still locate a phone over Wi-Fi or their offline networks. Block the SIM anyway — a live SIM exposes your bKash, Nagad and bank OTPs.
A hidden monitoring app can track any lost phone. Monitoring apps work only if installed beforehand and aren't a recovery tool. Secretly monitoring another person's phone is illegal.
Police can trace any phone within hours using the IMEI. Recovery depends on a GD and the phone reappearing on a network. One battalion recovered 3,165 phones from about 14,322 GDs over 22 months.
Any website with NEIR in its name is official. Only neir.btrc.gov.bd is BTRC's portal. Lookalike sites aren't run by BTRC.

The 10-minute setup that makes a lost phone findable

Every tool in this guide depends on settings you switch on before the phone goes missing. Do these today:

  • ☑ Save your IMEI (dial *#06#) in your email or Google Drive, along with a photo of the box and receipt.
  • ☑ Android: confirm Find Hub is on, and turn on Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Remote Lock and Identity Check.
  • ☑ Samsung: turn on Allow this phone to be found and Offline finding.
  • ☑ iPhone: turn on Find My, Find My network, Send Last Location and Stolen Device Protection.
  • ☑ Use a strong PIN or password, not a simple pattern, and never unlock your phone where others can watch.
  • ☑ Lock sensitive apps such as your gallery and wallets — here's how to lock apps on Android.
  • ☑ Add two-factor authentication that doesn't rely only on SMS, using our two-factor authentication guide.
  • ☑ Store passwords in a password manager so you can change them from any device — see our password manager guide.
  • ☑ Write down your recovery options — a backup email and phone number — so you can recover your Google account without the lost phone.
  • ☑ Check NEIR status with KYD to 16002 to confirm your handset is registered.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find my lost phone if it is switched off?

You'll usually see its last known location in Find Hub, Samsung Find or Find My. Some newer Pixel phones and iPhones can still be located for a period after powering off, but most Android phones need to be switched on. If it never comes back online, rely on your GD and the IMEI — police trace phones when they're used on a network again.

Can I track my lost phone with the IMEI number myself?

No. IMEI tracing requires operator records and is done by police and law-enforcement units. Websites and apps offering IMEI tracking to the public are scams. Your job is to include the IMEI in your GD so investigators can trace it.

How do I block a stolen phone in Bangladesh?

Request a lost or stolen lock through the NEIR Citizen Portal at neir.btrc.gov.bd, the NEIR app or your operator's customer care centre. Without internet, use *16161# or call 121. Once blocked, the handset won't work with any SIM on Bangladeshi networks, and you can unlock it through the same channels if it's recovered.

Can I file a GD for a lost phone online?

Yes. Use Bangladesh Police's Online GD app or gd.police.gov.bd. If the complaint qualifies as a GD, you receive the GD number and a digital copy by SMS. A phone snatched by force may require a visit to the police station, because theft is a cognizable offence.

How do I find my lost phone without Google account access?

Go to android.com/lock and use Remote Lock with your verified phone number to lock the screen, then recover your Google account from another device. For location, you'll need to sign in to Find Hub. Samsung owners can also try Samsung Find with their Samsung account.

What should I do first, block the SIM or find the phone?

Spend the first few minutes ringing, locating and locking the phone, since a thief may switch it off quickly. Then block the SIM immediately. A working SIM can receive OTPs for bKash, Nagad and your bank, which is often a bigger risk than losing the handset.

Will a factory reset stop a thief from using my phone?

Not by itself. Android's factory reset protection and Apple's Activation Lock keep the phone tied to your account after a wipe, but erasing removes your ability to track it. Lock first, erase only as a last resort — and on iPhone, never remove the device from Find My.

How do I know if a second-hand phone is stolen?

Text KYD followed by the IMEI to 16002 before paying, and check every IMEI on dual-SIM phones. A handset reported lost or stolen shows as blocked in NEIR and won't work on Bangladeshi networks.

Final thoughts: the phone is replaceable, your accounts are not

Knowing how to find a lost phone in Bangladesh comes down to three layers working together: Google, Samsung or Apple's tracking tools in the first minutes, SIM and mobile-wallet blocks to protect your money, and a GD plus an NEIR request that give police the IMEI trail they need. Set up the tools today, save your IMEI somewhere safe, and if the worst happens, follow the steps in order — fast, calm and without chasing anyone.
